Car Registrations

The 1903 Motor Car Act

came into force in Great Britain on January 1st 1904. It was introduced in light of the growing popularity of motor cars and their increasing numbers – Government realised that regulation of cars was absolutely necessary; they needed to be able to trace the identity of a vehicle and its owners in the event of an accident or theft. In the course of the resultant legislation, the

vehicle registration

mark was born.

Historically,

personalised plates

were associated with the rich and famous. Stars of the 1960s and 1970s such as Max Bygraves and Jimmy Tarbuck were well known owners. Today, footballers like Chelsea and England's John Terry, Manchester United and England's Wayne Rooney and their colleagues would not dream of getting into a car without its own

private plate
