Cover Plates

This is a very misleading term because there is, actually, no such thing as a "

cover plate

".

Number plates

must be made to British Standards and can only be supplied by a

registered number plate supplier

(

registered with DVLA

). Some less than scrupulous organisations will offer "

cover plates

" by which they facetiously mean that they are illegal in some way. They can be illegal by means of mis-spacing or the digits have been altered in some way. There should be no doubt as to the potential penalties of using "

cover plates

" – the mis-spacing of a

registration mark

or any other misrepresentation of it will render it illegal and the owner liable to a £1000 and confiscation of the

registration mark

.
