Suffix Number Plates

The predecessor to the

Prefix number

plates was the

suffix number plate

; the last of which (the Y suffix) was given to cars that were registered on August 1st 1982. The suffix letter showed the date of first registration eg: ABC 123Y (in this example, the letter Y indicates that the vehicle was first registered on or after August 1st 1982). The system was replaced by the

prefix number plates

system when it ran out of alphabet!
